Before You Begin

Before you begin your 2018 Radio Mercury Awards entry, have the following information ready:

  • Complete credits, including the people who produced the entry; e.g., writer(s), producer(s), talent, etc. Make sure the credits are complete and accurate before you finalize your entry.
  • A 100-words-or-less description/synopsis, if required.
  • The actual audio/video file for your entry.
  • Payment information; e.g., credit card number, etc.
  • Ensure that your entry was broadcast, digitally or on-air, transmitted or released between Jan. 1, 2017 and Mar. 5, 2018

Important Dates: 2018 Call For Entry

  • Call for Entry Deadline: Monday, March 5
  • Live Final Round Judging: Wednesday, March 28
  • 2018 Finalists Announced: Early April

Call for Entry | Guidelines

This year, our first and final round judges want to hear radio work that creatively tells a client’s story, from building a brand to promoting a cause or movement, in a compelling, memorable and effective way. It’s the creative idea and execution of the radio to deliver the main message that matter.

2018 Entry Categories for Agencies, Production Companies, Brands

Need to Know:

  • Read the Before You Begin, Guidelines and General Information sections before you start your entry.
  • You can enter a spot or campaign in more than one eligible category. For example, you can enter a commercial spot into the Agency/Production Company Produced Commercial and the Game Changer: Most Innovative Commercial Use of Radio categories, as long as the commercial meets the guidelines for those categories
  • You can enter a campaign category and also enter a spot from that category into an eligible category

  

Agency/Production Company Produced Commercial
$160 per entry

Submit a radio commercial created for a client, originally produced and primarily in English, created by an agency, production company or advertiser.

 

Radio Campaign
$360 per entry

Enter a radio campaign created for a client, originally produced and primarily in English, created by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.  Campaign is primarily in English.

  • Submit two to three spots from the campaign. Single spot entries will be redirected to the Single Spot category. 
  • Individual spots from the campaign can be entered in other categories.

 

Integrated Campaign with Radio or Audio
$360 per entry

Enter an integrated media campaign created for a client, originally produced by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser, in which radio and/or audio is an essential element.

  • Campaign can be in English or Spanish.
  • Do not submit a generic show reel of the entire campaign. Customize the entry and put the radio/audio elements front and center. Entries that don't put radio/audio front and center may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them.
  • Entry length should be between 90 seconds and two minutes. Edit your work to an excerpt if you need to. Entries longer than two minutes may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them in the correct length.
  • Submit a 100-words-or-less description of how radio and/or audio was integrated with other media within the campaign. You will be able to copy/paste this description in when you enter.
  • Individual spots from the campaign can be entered in other categories.

  

PSA Spot or Campaign
$100 per entry

Enter a radio PSA spot and/or radio created for a client, originally produced by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.

  • Work can be in English or Spanish.
  • Submit between two to three spots for a campaign.
  • Individual spots can be entered from a campaign, along with the campaign, as separate entries within this category.

  

Spanish Language Commercial or Campaign
$160 per entry

Enter a radio commercial or radio campaign created for a client, originally produced in Spanish or primarily in Spanish, by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.

  • Submit between two to three spots for a campaign.
  • Include a side-by-side English translation for each spot, or all the spots, if you enter a campaign.
  • Individual commercials can be entered from a campaign, along with the campaign, as separate entries within this category.

 

Game Changer: Most Innovative Commercial Use of Radio
$160 per entry
Note: This is a Showcase category and is not eligible for the Best of Show.

Enter work created for a client, that presents a "Game Changing" use of broadcast radio that is innovative, forward-thinking and expands the boundaries of traditional broadcast radio to advance the idea of how radio is heard and experienced.

Work was originally created for a client and produced by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.

  • The work should be a broadcast or digitally-delivered radio commercial or campaign.
  • Work can be in English or Spanish.
  • Entry can be of any length and should be submitted in the original broadcast or digitally-delivered airtime length.  For judging purposes, however, please submit an excerpt of any work that is longer than two minutes.  Entries longer than two minutes may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them in the correct length.
  • Submit a 100-words-or-less description on why your work should win. You will be able to copy/paste this description in when you enter.

 

Most Innovative Use of Audio
$160 per entry
Note: This is a Showcase category and is not eligible for the Best of Show.

Enter work created for a client that presents non-broadcast audio that is innovative, forward-thinking and advances the idea of how audio is heard and experienced.

Work was originally created for a client and produced by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.

  • The work should be non-traditional, non-broadcast audio.
  • Examples of work you can submit include: podcasts; multimedia work with audio as a critical component; sound collages; music or non-verbal audio; subliminal audio messages; audio SFX; transmitters that deliver audio in non-traditional or unusual settings (e.g., billboards, outdoor signage, displays, etc.); transmitters or embedded audio that deliver Individual audio messages, etc.
  • Work can be in English or Spanish. 
  • Entry can be of any length.  However, for judging purposes, please submit an excerpt of any work that is longer than two minutes.  Entries longer than two minutes may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them in the correct length.
  • Do not submit a generic show reel. Customize the entry to showcase the audio elements. Entries that don't showcase the audio elements may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them.

$160 per entry

Submit a radio commercial created for a client by a radio station/radio group and/or writers/producers hired by the radio station.  Work can be in English or Spanish.  Spanish Language entries should be originally produced and primarily in Spanish.

  

Radio Campaign
$360 per entry

Enter a radio campaign created for a client, originally produced and primarily in English, created by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser.  Campaign is primarily in English.

  • Submit two to three spots from the campaign. Single spot entries will be redirected to the Single Spot category. 
  • Individual spots from the campaign can be entered in other categories.

 

Radio Station Produced Promotional Spot
$160 per entry
Note: This is a Showcase category and is not eligible for the Best of Show.

Enter a single promotional spot created by a radio station or group for a client, a radio station/network, or for a charitable/nonprofit organization or special event. The entry can be a recorded, produced commercial or a live read/on-air endorsement.  Entries will be judged on how successfully and creatively the spot communicates the promotion and/or call to action.

  • The spot should engage a listener to do at least one of the following: Enter a station or client contest; participate in a station or client charity or holiday drive; tune-in to station programming, a music or entertainment special, station concert or festival, or in-studio performance or interview; attend a live event, sporting event, charity drive or holiday drive; or, a station-brand promo with no call to action.
  • Entry length should not exceed two minutes. Edit your work to an excerpt of two minutes or less if you need to. Entries longer than two minutes may be returned and you may be asked to resubmit them in the correct length. (If your entry becomes a winner, we may play an excerpt of up to one minute at the awards event.)
  • Entries can be in English or Spanish.

 

Integrated Campaign with Radio or Audio
$360 per entry

Enter an integrated media campaign created for a client, originally produced by an agency, production company, radio station or advertiser, in which radio and/or audio is an essential element.

  • Campaign can be in English or Spanish.

2018 Entry Categories for Students

Student Produced Spot
$30 per entry

Submit a radio commercial created by an individual student or team of students from a qualified educational institution; e.g., U.S. chartered school or university or a U.S. professional, technical or "proprietary" school offering education and training in advertising, art and design or broadcasting. 

  • Work should have been created between the 2017 school/curriculum year and the first semester of 2018.
  • Entry should meet typical U.S. broadcast standards.
  • Entry can be in English or Spanish. Spanish Language entries should be originally produced and primarily in Spanish.
  • If the commercial is for an actual product or service, it is entrant's responsibility to obtain full and proper clearance from all parties involved, including copyright and trademark permission.  It is entrant's responsibility to obtain proper clearance for any talent and/or music used, if necessary.

Meet the Chief Judge

Sean Bryan, Co-Chief Creative Officer, McCann NY

The Radio Mercury Awards is pleased to announce Sean Bryan, Co-Chief Creative Officer at McCann NY, as the 2018 Chief Judge for the 27th Annual Radio Mercury Awards Competition.

Bryan is also the Global Chief Creative Officer of m:united//McCann (a dedicated unit of McCann servicing Microsoft exclusively). An advertising veteran, Sean and his creative partner Tom Murphy have spent time at award-winning agencies such as DDB Chicago and JWT NY. They have worked with Microsoft, Verizon and Cigna, among many others.

The Radio Mercury Awards, the only competition exclusively devoted to radio, was established in 1992 to encourage and reward
the development of effective and creative radio commercials. The annual Radio Mercury Awards competition draws entries from advertising agencies, production houses, radio stations, and educational institutions across the country. Approximately 19,500 commercials have competed for over $3.4 million in prizes. The Radio Creative Fund (RCF), a non-profit corporation funded by the radio industry, governs
the Radio Mercury Awards. The Radio Advertising Bureau produces the Radio Mercury Awards.

Radio Mercury Awards Announces 2018 Final Round Judging Panel

The Radio Mercury Awards announced the final round judging panel for the 27th Annual Radio Mercury Awards today. The jury, drawn together with the help of Chief Judge Sean Bryan, Co-Chief Creative Officer at McCann NY, comprises thought leaders from across the country, representing all size markets and diverse audiences for some of radio's top spending advertising clients.

2017 Radio Mercury Awards Winners Announced

Winners for the 2017 Radio Mercury Awards were announced this evening at the 26th annual awards presentation held at Stage 48 in New York. This year’s $50,000 Best of Show award was given to The Richards Group for their Motel 6 Campaign.
